The Partnership at Drugfree.org Presents “The Dionysus Project” in Kentucky

Actors read scenes from Euripides' "Bacchae" to audience members

Last week, The Partnership at Drugfree.org teamed up with social impact company Outside The Wire and Kentucky’s Operation UNITE in Manchester and Hazard, KY for a series of dramatic readings and town hall discussions to address the issue of substance abuse in a unique format. The events attracted more than 500 total audience members and received notable local media coverage on Lexington’s ABC and CBS stations.

Oscar-nominated actor Jesse Eisenberg joined Adam Driver of HBO’s “Girls,” Tony Award-nominated actress Kathleen Chalfant and Broadway actor Peter Francis James to read scenes from Euripides’ Bacchae, a Greek Tragedy about the destructive power of intoxication. Following each reading, a town hall discussion engaged the audience on the stigmatized issue and guided them toward making correlations between the play and the issue of prescription medicine misuse and abuse in their communities. Congressman Hal Rogers (KY-05) joined the knowledgeable team of experts for the first panel discussion in Manchester.

Another set of readings and town hall discussions on this issue is set to take place in Los Angeles late this summer. We are grateful to have had the opportunity to work with both organizations and all of the talented actors and panelists.

This sounds like a most interesting program. Any chance they will be taking it on the road to other cities besides LA?
