Substance Abuse Coalition Closes after 11 Years

Good deeds and good work weren’t enough to keep the Historic Triangle Substance Abuse Coalition’s (HTSAC) doors open. The Virginia-based coalition ran out of grant funds last week and had to shut down, according to the dailypress.com.

Coalition members included the College of William and Mary, schools in several counties, law enforcement, human services and mental health organizations, and prevention and treatment providers.

HTSAC focused on prevention, treatment, and recovery; over 2,600 children participated in its programs last year. During its 11 years of operation, the coalition hosted forums on quitting cigarettes and on the abuse of prescription drugs, inhalants, and alcohol.

To learn that an organization like this has run out of money is galling. After all, when was the last time you heard of an alcohol, tobacco, or drug company closing its doors because it was in the red?
