All States Could Soon Allow Scans of Driver’s Licenses

A bill in the state legislature would make Nebraska the last of the 50 U.S. states to allow driver’s licenses to be electronically scanned by liquor-store clerks and for other identification purposes, the Associated Press reported Jan. 25.

Supporters say the legislation, which received preliminary approval from lawmakers, would make it easier to determine the age of individuals attempting to purchase alcohol, tobacco products, and lottery tickets.

Concerns about identity theft were voiced by opponents. Only police and courts are presently allowed to get electronic data off Nebraska driver’s licenses.
