It doesn’t have to be this way

Story Of Hope By Bobby
It doesn't have to be this way

I starting drinking at age 10.  By 12, I was a blackout drunk.  Because I went to all private schools, including skipping a grade, access to drugs and alcohol became easier and easier.

(I share the full 45 minute version in the fellowships but here I’ll just go over the highlights)

I drank through my acadcemic career drinking so well in college that they made me fraternity vice-president.  I drank through playing semi-pro soccer, being active in local politics and numerous sales jobs.  In my drinking career I would get arrested 31 times.  My disease was smart so it showed me how to use politics and money to stay out of trouble.

Along the way, I picked up a crack habit.  After a while, every day became about the chase to use and to find the money in order to use.

One magic night when i was 35, arrest 31, I stopped.  My Higher Power has kept me sober for over 10 years continuously now without a relapse.

I do a lot of 12 step work and every time I meet someone who wants to stop, the first words out of my mouth are “it doesn’t have to be this way.”
