~National Spokesperson Melissa Gilbert to Speak~
NEW YORK, NY – September 8, 2011 – The Partnership at Drugfree.org, a nonprofit organization that helps parents prevent, intervene in and find treatment for drug and alcohol use by their children, is proud to be the Signature Partner of the 2011 Art of Recovery Expo in Phoenix, Arizona.
The Expo, part of National Recovery Month, is an annual, free public event providing hope and assistance to those in recovery. It will be held on September 24, 2011 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Phoenix Convention Center and will bring together coalitions, government agencies and treatment organizations to provide education, resources and hope to people affected by substance abuse.
Representing The Partnership at Drugfree.org at the Expo are the organization’s National Spokesperson and Celebrity Champion Melissa Gilbert and Tom Hedrick, Senior Communications Officer at The Partnership at Drugfree.org.
Melissa Gilbert is an accomplished actor, author and parent whose work to advance the mission of The Partnership at Drugfree.org is underscored by her personal experiences; she has been in recovery since 2005. In her 2010 book, Prairie Tale: A Memoir, Gilbert inspired many, recounting her own road to recovery. Gilbert will speak at this year’s Art of Recovery Expo and share her insight and experience with others who have traveled the same journey.
Tom Hedrick, a founding member of The Partnership at Drugfree.org, will moderate panels discussing treatment and recovery. He will also shoot video for and invite attendees to join The Partnership at Drugfree.org’s new You Are Not Alone campaign, a storytelling effort that will enlist the millions impacted by addiction, opening a new dialogue around this disease and lowering the barriers families face when trying to get their children the help they need.
“The Art of Recovery Expo is an exciting opportunity for parents and families to realize that they are not alone when facing alcohol and drug issues with their kids,” Hedrick said. “The Partnership at Drugfree.org can be an advocate for the help, resources and support those parents need. Despite the despair felt by so many people that struggle with addiction, it is not a hopeless cause. Thousands of people will share their inspiring stories of recovery at the Expo, and we are honored to be a part of this event.”
