Southerners Less Likely to Smoke Marijuana, Survey Finds

People living in Southern states are less likely to smoke marijuana than those in other regions of the country, according to a new study. Residents of Alabama, Mississippi and Texas are the least likely to use the drug, USA Today reports.

The study by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration found people living in those states are more likely to see smoking marijuana once a month as risky. They may be concerned with health issues, the drug’s effect on the brain, psychosis, or trouble finding and keeping a job.

California, Oregon and Washington have much higher rates of marijuana use, the study found.

An estimated 75 million people ages 12 and older perceived a great risk of harm from using marijuana once a month.
