U.S. Postal Service Considers Delivering Alcoholic Beverages to Raise Revenue

The U.S. Postal Service is considering delivering alcoholic beverages as a way to raise revenue, according to Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe. He told the Associated Press alcohol deliveries could raise as much as $50 million annually.

The Postal Service could use special boxes that would hold two, four or six bottles, and ship for a flat rate anywhere in the United States, he said. “There’s a lot of money to be made in shipping beer, wine and spirits,” he said. “We’d like to be in that business.”

Currently, mailing alcoholic beverages is restricted by law. If customers use alcoholic beverage boxes for shipments, they must cover any logos or labels.

It’s against the law because Prohibition saw to that. In case you didn’t notice, Prohibition was repealed a long time ago.

Mailing beer isn’t going to stimulate underage drinking. Far cheaper (and easier) to use your fake ID at the local convenience store than to convince your buddy to mail beers to you six at a time.

Seriously! Give it up USPS. Making money on delivering products that are restricted by law is so irresponsible. Sending mail via USPS is becoming obsolete. What USPS should be doing is preparing for that obsolescence, and postal workers should be training for other jobs.

There is a reason why it is against the law to ship alcohol. Does the post master really want to add this liability to the business of delivering letters. How will this solve the problem of underage drinking. Why not just retail “Postal” brand beer and wine label and make even more money? I am joking on that by the way. The USPS is being crushed because congress required them to pre-fund their pension fund (an effort to kill the organization), something no private corporation does probably in the world. This is a move of desparation.
