Study Says Smoking Marijuana Worse for Lungs than Cigarettes

Smoking a single marijuana joint is equivalent to smoking 2.5 to 5 cigarettes in terms of damage to the lungs, largely due to differences in how pot and cigarette users smoke.

The Guardian reported July 31 that researchers at the Medical Research Institute of New Zealand found that the deep drags taken by marijuana users, along with their penchant for holding smoke in before exhaling, can cause problems like obstructed airways and hyperinflation of the lungs. The lack of filters on marijuana joints also contributes to lung problems, researchers said.

The study involved 339 adult volunteers divided into four groups: marijuana-only smokers, tobacco-only smokers, marijuana and tobacco smokers, and nonsmokers.

All of the smokers reported coughing and wheezing, but only tobacco smokers exhibited signs of emphysema.

The study was published online in the journal Thorax.

I think you’re all debating a subject that’s more or less endless, I smoke cannabis myself and have for the past 5 years, I suffer from bad chest infections and have difficulty breathing whilst I am laying down and I’m only 21 years old. Cannabis can effect people differently and I’m sure most people do understand that!

Please read this: Take it from me and learn from my mistakes.

First of all, I’m an Engineer by education from a accredited school. I didn’t even start on that degree till I stopped weed. Before that I smoked weed like it was going out of style for 10 years. I woke up with a bong hit and went to bed smoking a joint. In those 10 years there might have been collectively about 100 days; that is, a day here or day there where I didn’t smoke.

Now 10 years of never touching the stuff and I’m STILL feeling the effect. I feel like I’ve lost my brain and I have perhaps a couple of brain cells left. I have constant brain fog and yes I stopped 10 years ago. I can’t for the light of me think of certain words; that is, I know what I want to say but I’m stuck half way through. Sometimes people finish my sentences for me. It’s almost like other people can retreive a phrase a word about 5 times quicker than me. Sometimes I’ll be talking and I’ll be completely lost and wonder where I’m going with this conversation. In short, I’m experiencing what others in my office over 50 call senior moments already and I’m late 30s. I’ve tried a lot of things to get rid of the brain fog but it won’t go away, somedays after a good night sleep I’m sort of ok. Did I mention I’m an engineer? I’m expected to be the sharpest person in my job and a lot of times I have to fake it to get by.

My experience might not reflect yours but here is the TRUTH:
Pot makes you mentally SLOW, LAZY and creates APATHY. It is very addictive. There was a time when all I could think of was geeting pot. It will take over your life very quickly. It’s almost as bad and addictive as Cocaine or Heroin. It does lead to harder drugs. The worst thing you can tell yourself is, “oh, it’s just Pot, it’s nothing, I can’t stop when I want to”.

The breaking point for me was, it literally didn’t do anything for me anymore because I’d smoke an eighth of killer green bud to myself over a weekend and it still wasn’t enough.

I’ve shared my life story with you, please say a prayer for me!

This was a study done in 2007, it’s been proven that it’s false. Telling people that pot is worse for your lungs than cigs is a total crock of shit!!!! This study also fails to tell you that they are talking about people smoking pot with tobacco or using blunts for rolling…
Get the Right Facts…and get the facts from 2014… That’s the problem with the internet most of the studies that are on there are from a million years ago and have all been proven false!

  4. Ben / July 17, 2014 at 5:26 pm

This information seems false. How could they judge it down to “times this” “times that”. Cigarette smokers smoke many more cigarettes a day than marijuana users and need much more, not to mention the 4,000 chemicals in cigarettes. It seemed to glorify cigarette use by saying “marijuana smoking worse for lungs than cigarettes”. Also I’ve never heard of a single weed smoker that got any type of disease related to it ever.

  5. freddy / July 10, 2014 at 4:35 pm

This is a false statement, study, and report. The info is undefined and offers no real proof unlike a real 20 year study published by Huffington Post that tells the exact opposite of whatever this writter is trying to pull over your eyes. Anything to make marijuana scary for if such was the case doctors would not prescribe it for all the ailments of glaucoma, cancer, eating disorders, pain, stress the list goes on. For if it were a true statement then doctors would also prescribe cigarettes for stress and calming of the nerves. Have yet to see that prescription anywhere in the world. #dontbelievthehype

So what about vaporizing the cannabis and only inhaling the cbds and thc, with receiving only about 7% of the original amount of tar and carbon monoxide compared to smoking it the weed in the pipe way. And plus its proven to help with many neurological syptoms and prevent worse ones feom developing. What cancer does tobacco benefit? Hmm idk last time I’ve heard or witness was how many people had heart attacks and strokes at ages as young as 35! For people to say cannabis is more “harmful” than tobacco bc one joint is equivalent to smoking 2.5 to 5 cigarettes. Why is it proven 500,000 people die from tobacco products. Yet still there hasn’t been one documented case of a death accouring from any form of consuming cannabis is any form. “Oh yeah eating it causes no health problems at all only benifits our endocannabinoid system when digested” so yeah im going to continue to eat my weed cookies and smoke my vape and live a happy healthy life without any influence of tobacco. Anyone else who disagrees with my decision. Is just a hater

  7. straight chic / June 15, 2014 at 7:22 am

I am over 60. I have seen many of my friends that smoked die from lung disease and heart attacks, after suffering from oxygen tanks and coughing (including my own mother) I had a boyfriend who smoked pot. he claimed it is healthy for you. He had NO sex drive already in his early forty age. he was a burn out. He couldn’t even keep his place clean or do dishes. he could barely hold a job. He would cough in the morning until his head turned blue for over half and hour. I am glad I do not use any smoking. I have lead a happy and healthy life Everyone talks about how it doesn’t damage your lungs. I disagree with that but , even more does it damage your brain? There is a thing called serotonin that is destroyed by smoking pot. You always need more to make you think you are happy. If you don’t use these things to keep you happy, you have natural happiness such as I have and I am glad I do not need to lie and defend such things as this. Jesus makes me happy and I am glad I am clean.

    • your old friend / July 3, 2014 at 2:36 am

The “connection” between cannabis and low serotonin levels is baloney. one may try to validate the statement saying that long term addiction can lead to depression.

However serotonin levels spike way more when one eats their favorite food, has sex, or thinks positively about themselves and their future. What brings about positive thought about ones self?

Believing that as long as you feel bad for doing bad things, you get to go to heaven when you die, where you will experience serotonin levels higher than you ever could on earth!!

You are right about one thing though… he was depressed. depression lead to the mess of his house, decline of appearance and health. But drug abuse is often a symptom of depression rather than the cause.

Perhaps instead of praying for forgiveness you should have tried to reach out to a friend that was clearly troubled.

    • your honest opinion / July 9, 2014 at 10:23 pm

Where did you get that information? I’m sorry but I’ve used recreationally for over 12 years and I’ve always had a job, kept a clean house, and enjoyed sex! I feel like you are being very stereotypical and need to get your information from multiple sources before you post a comment on the internet! Millions of people get relief from cannabis! No one needs it to feel happy or stay happy for that matter! It has its uses and just like anything it can be abused! Sorry but that was all wrong!

While chemically very similar, there are fundamental differences in the pharmacological properties between cannabis and tobacco smoke. Cannabis smoke contains cannabinoids whereas tobacco smoke contains nicotine. Available scientific data, that examines the carcinogenic properties of inhaling smoke and its biological consequences, suggests reasons why tobacco smoke, but not cannabis smoke, may result in lung cancer. Please read the scientific studies before posting false information and site accurate sources. You will find support to my statement here

It is an empirical fact that alcohol is more lethal and dangerous than cannabis. The moral equivalence of condemning cannabis in society while approving alcohol is hypocrisy. Alcohol overdose can be fatal and According to the center for disease control there are 88,000 deaths attributed to excessive alcohol use alone not including accidents and driving. With prescription drugs there is a fatal overdose every 15 minutes while there has never been one documented fatal overdose with cannabis. There are no statistics for cannabis deaths as there are none. How can this be? It’s been in widespread use in the US for over 50 years now and in civilization for over 5,000. Surely if this substance is so dangerous we would have evidence in the year 2014. The government says this substance is just as deadly as heroin, crack, and methamphetamine and those are obviously dangerous and indeed deadly and no one would argue for reclassification but does cannabis belong in schedule 1 in the CSA? Does any unbiased physician believe that cannabis belongs in this schedule? Why is alcohol not in this list? It seems that is has a high level of abuse potential and actually does kill people and definitely does not have any medical benefit.

The main physical harm from cannabis is from combustion and smoke to the lungs. That has always been a major concern for me and now there is a way to completely avoid the carcinogens through vaporization. In fact I haven’t smoked in years and my lungs feel great and I never have any sinus problems, coughing or bronchial issues. Being that your a Pulmonology specialists you must be aware of the largest long term study to date on marijuana smoking and it’s effects on the lungs by Donald P. Tashkin MD at UCLA. He found that there is no link to marijuana smoking and lung cancer. There was even a very minor decrease in lung cancer than the non-marijuana group suggesting cannabis could have some sort of protective property. There have also been studies in mice who were injected with thc that showed tumor growth was inhibited by 60% in THC-treated mice compared with vehicle-treated control mice. That is directly from the web site. Anyone who thinks cannabis has no medicinal benefit need to look no further to Federal government’s patent on cannabis a therapeutic “Patent No. 6630507: Cannabinoids are found to have particular application as neuroprotectants, for example in limiting neurological damage following ischemic insults, such as stroke or trauma.” How can the government deny the benefits of medical marijuana even as it holds a patent for those very same benefits?

    • Ben / July 17, 2014 at 5:40 pm

Exactly! Alcohol is highly addictive, has the potential to cause issues. It’s not on schedule 1. Cigarettes have high potential for abuse and cause problems too, but not illegal either. Weed has no strong potential for abuse and never causes problems other than legal ones, completely illegal and throw it onto schedule one. Let’s throw religion and all other morals out of the country but we will keep our morals on marijuana and keep cocaine and methamphetamine on schedule 2 declaring marijuana is much more dangerous than they are, it’s all based on morals with the government, not facts.

This is a blatant lie. The act of smoking in of itself is harmful to the lungs because you’re inhaling dried plant matter; that being said marijuana is not addictive (like cigarettes), does not cause cancer (like cigarettes), and does not cause heart disease (like cigarettes). Literally every other study ever conducted has proven medical benefits of marijuana; to claim the exact opposite of a known scientific fact is duplicitous and harmful to the public.

the January 2014 issue of this magazine THORAX; studies are showing that COPD is caused by the deep inhalation of KB because people hold their hits in longer and it expands when you cough. Jock boys quit swim team and workouts shortly after they start to hangout in stairwells and start getting stoned. After a while your values change but so what. That is why a few years ago nobody wanted to legalize dope and now nobody cares because we are all stoned. After a while you start snorting pills and shooting smack. That is why these people want us all drug free. Are you going to prove them right?

The study has one young white guy, and a few cab drivers that hardly smoked any tobacco at all and they had the same damaging effects in 15 years of toking up refer. It said 3 or 4 joints is equal to one pack. So for sure Don’t smoke any tobacco if you like to smoke pot. Be sensible you don’t need a scientist to tell you this stuff. It is common knowledge. I am kinda middle of the road. I got busted with a pack of papers so I lost my teaching license. It could have been worse.
I actually got a break the way I look at it.

Teachers don’t really have competency test and they don’t test us like nurse, but we have to drive sober and get up at 5 am and do our lesson plans. This is completely untrue.
Tobacco is an aliotrophic plant that contains Nicotine, which has 8 times the toxicity rate of rattlesnake venom, and cigarettes contain urea and methane.
Cannabis/Marijuana is a flowering herb with a solid bud. The herb contains 80 different cannabinoids, the most important being 9-delta-tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC. THC has no LD50 and therefore can -not- be overdosed on. The USA ran an experiment where they put masks on monkeys and pumped them full of 30 grams of marijuana smoke; that’s over $200 worth of marijuana at once. After several experiments the monkeys died of brain atrophy from suffocation with 0 visible effects from marijuana.

If you believe in God, then read the bible. God gave us Marijuana.
“And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.” Genesis 1:29

I’m not saying either one is good, but, somebody got the brilliant idea to mislead kids in regard to both Tobacco and Marijuana. Every breathe you take contains Methane, it’s a natural part of air, admittedly in small amounts. Your body, for instance your blood contains urea, Nicotine is one of the reasons cigarettes are addictive, it’s not what kills you. There are alot of carcinogens in cigarettes. Generally smokers die from damage to the Cardiac or Pulmonary systems in the form of cancer, strokes, heart attacks, Lung Cancer,….Since I was in high school, I’ve noticed something, more and more people are using longer papers to roll there joints (I’m in College, I’ve seen 3 out of 5 smoke pot). If anti-smoking groups and anti-drug groups didn’t lie and exagerate, there would be much less drug use by minors. To understand, ask yourself, what is fire? Fire or combustion is a chemical reaction, Tobacco does give off more chemicals. What I find interesting is that not one search turned up the actual number of chemicals released when Tobacco or Marijuana combusts, this is a text book only a med student would have. The bottom line for me is that the key to life is moderation, impulse control. Drugs will make you feel great, and after the first time someone uses them the next day they think about all the bullcrap they were told and forget every bit of it. I mentioned urea and Methane because you did but the anti-smoking group truth, were asking people which fact is grosser “the fact that cigarettes contain urea which is in cat pee or that Methane is in Cigarettes and dog crap, Your in constant contact with both at all times. Di-Hydrogen Monoxide kills thousands of babies every yearDHMO is found naturally in fruit. When inhaled DHMO can kill an adult in minutes, even though DHMO is not regulated, DHMO is often used by marijuana smokers, they use it in special pipss to enhance the experience;, everything I said is true, try googling DHMO or Di-Hydrogen Monoxide. The group Truth is like the brady campaign. Mislead, lie do whatever it takes for what they are against, where the end justifies the means. There is no legitimate scientific “study” that proves marijuana smoke can be even close as harmful to lungs as tobacco, let alone more harmful… I’m not even gonna start about addiction. Actually weed is not so bad; weed does have tar, but tar alone is not bad. People can easily cough tar up, and tar alone doesnt do much harm; it is only harmful when you cannot cough it up.
Weed actually has more tar than cigs, but cigs have chemicals in them which make our lungs close up- this causes a build up of tar- which is bad.
Weed on the otherhand has no chemicals added to it, and actually opens out lungs up more, and make them more sensitive: this is why after smoking weed people cough- it makes our lungs (temporarily) more sensitive.
This actually helps- because it makes us cough we can easily get rid of the tar.

The only reason Weed is (still) illegal is because a lot of people would loose a lot of money from it- There would be no need for most pain relieving medicine, not to mention all the other drugs that would not be used because of weed.

Please don’t talk about something you have no idea about. Marijuana has no tar. Tar is bad for you, it contains the most potent carcinogen, or cancer causing substance, in cigarettes. You cannot cough up the tar you get from cigarettes, and the closing of the lungs has nothing to do with what tar does to your lungs. When the lungs close, that causes emphysema, which is a totally different disease where air gets trapped in your lungs. You might be right about marijuana increasing the sensitivity of your lungs, iv’e never heard about something like that, but that has nothing to do with coughing up tar. Also, most chemicals in tobacco are found in the plant itself, and how are you sure that the marijuana you bought from the shady street vendor doesn’t have anything other than marijuana in it? With cigarettes you at least know that whoever made it knows what they’re doing. I’m not saying that cigarettes are better, because they’re not. I’m just saying that marijuana is very bad for you.

Kubar, I’m with you on everything you said except for the part about weed not being a drug. I hear a lot of people say this, and while I am absolutely 100% in favor of legalization, marijuana is definitely a drug. The Oxford online dictionary define a drug as “A medicine or other substance which has a physiological effect when ingested or otherwise introduced into the body.” It is, of course, a naturally occurring drug but it definitely has physiological effects. Besides, being a drug isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

Its basis is the highly reactive hydroxyl radical, a species shown to mutate DNA, denature proteins, disrupt cell membranes, and chemically alter critical neurotransmitters. The atomic components of DHMO are found in a number of caustic, explosive and poisonous compounds such as Sulfuric Acid, Nitroglycerine and Ethyl Alcohol.
