“Molly,” Powder or Crystal Form of MDMA, is Popular at Music Festivals

/By

“Molly,” the powder or crystal form of MDMA, the chemical used in Ecstasy, has been a popular drug at music festivals this year, CNN reports.

Molly, short for molecule, is considered to be pure MDMA, unlike Ecstasy, which generally is laced with other ingredients, such as caffeine or methamphetamine. According to Pax Prentiss, co-founder and CEO of Passages rehabilitation centers in Southern California, molly users tend to be ages 16 to 24.

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) considers MDMA to be a Schedule I controlled substance, which means it has a high potential for abuse, and no accepted use in medical treatment. The DEA notes that MDMA can cause confusion, anxiety, depression, paranoia, sleep problems, and drug craving. The drug also can cause muscle tension, tremors, involuntary teeth clenching, muscle cramps, nausea, faintness, chills, sweating, and blurred vision. “High doses of MDMA can interfere with the ability to regulate body temperature, resulting in a sharp increase in body temperature (hyperthermia), leading to liver, kidney and cardiovascular failure. Severe dehydration can result from the combination of the drug’s effects and the crowded and hot conditions in which the drug is often taken,” the DEA reports.

While fewer than 4 percent of emergency room visits in 2009 were due to MDMA use, the national Drug Abuse Warning Network found that from 2004 to 2009, there was a 123 percent increase in the number of emergency room visits involving MDMA taken alone or in combination with pharmaceuticals, alcohol or both.

Pro drug war people, please explain to me how, if MDMA really were this vicious killer drug, how is it that it’s so popular? Don’t you think the word would get around that people were dropping dead left, right and centre?
They’re not are they? All your emotional pleas and horror stories are obviously not representative of the of the experience of this drug for 99.9% percent of people. Maybe there are some other factors to consider that you haven’t thought of yet. I know it hurts…but keep trying to think your way through this maze.

Yes, popularity of a drug with the high potential of abuse is the perfect way to judge whether it’s general use should be allowed or even regulated. Heroin, crystal meth, crack are all very popular, so let’s just back off of trying to regulate the use, manufacturing and distribution of these materials as well as MDMA. If that is your idea of logical thought, I will probably continue with my pattern of thought instead of jumping on board with yours as “a way to think your way through this maze”

I can’t believe how many people are against this drug. You can’t abuse it. Its impossible. Literally.
MDMA inhibits the reuptake of seratonin and causes intense feelings of joy and empathy. I have used it one time, and would use it again if I had the opportunity. You can’t take mdma more than once a month or two or it won’t work well, or won’t work at all. It has the potential to cure people of their depression, PTSD and OCD.
It cured mine. I took MDMA in November and since then I have had a much happier outlook on life with no use of any other drugs, and my horrible OCD and worrying is mostly gone.
Think if people who wanted to comitt suicide got to try pure MDMA and it saved their life when all elce failed. The fact that this drug (or any drug) is illegal (especially one that you would never ever hurt anyone on, because MDMA makes you love every thing you could love) is outrageous.
If you die from MDMA, it is your own fault.

Drug will always be around for humans. They will never go away. It’s easier for kids to get weed than it is for alcohol. The worst thing I hate and everyone else hates is what other people tell you what you can and cant do in your life. War on drugs, please. How about war on wasting our fucking tax dollars. Cops, judges, and many more people agree. Why
keep fighting a war that with a tactics. Drugs are being sold at higher rates and more pure than ever than before. Why, people want to get high. Lol, u want to stop drugs by a war, then lets start a war to prevent people frm eating. Wait, that will kill everyone. Holy shit, thats the answer. Destroy humanity. Its a waste of my time writting this message, because retards want to waste money on a war that is losing very bad. Besides, what the difference between getting drugs from the black market or a doctor that gives you multiple drgs that will kill you for a cheaper price. Anyways, how do people die from prescriptions? Come on, give me an answer. But yet, your going to judge MDMA.

“molly” is very popular here in NJ.

everyone boasts that theirs is ‘pure’… some kids do it every day. mostly, it seems, out of boredom.

one kid, a friend of mine, used to do it a lot. now he’s stopped – but he’s a different person. quiet all the time. never seems quite happy.

he won’t talk about it – but he’s a different person now. not the same as before he did all the molly.

i don’t see people talking about this. mostly ppl talk about the day after – but what about long term?

    “Molly, short for molecule”

False. That doesn’t even make sense. Drugs have been given female names for a while…it is called Molly because MDMA starts with an M. Other drugs either follow that pattern or take on names with similarities of the drug.

    LSD – Lucy
    MethampheTamine – Tina
    MariJuana – MaryJane
    Cocaine – Connie

    etc.

All you people keep talking about your bad experience we’ll are you sure you took pure mdma , probably not there are so many other drugs that imitate the effects of mdma there’s mda , mdpv .etc . I took mdma once a week for two months, (pure mdma ) crystal form , tested.. I no longer take it but I find it was a wonderful experience , i’ve felt happier since taking it , it pulled me out my depression , if you know it’s pure , you stay.hydrated without over doing it cause excessive water intake can be dangerous too , and don’t over heat.your self , what’s the harm . I wouldn’t suggest making it a habit , because it can cause depression if you over do it . Statistics say your more likely to die from cig., skydiving , drinking , car accidents , falling down your freaking stairs . It’s 1 in 10000 , when cigarette use is 1 in 100 people . People really need to learn there fact before speaking . Btw I am a chemist and I have an associate degree in physiology , so don’t thing I am just some young child defending it , I just want the facts straight . The asprin , advil , beer , tylenol , can all kill you as we’ll if taken unreasonably.

Hmm… I’m a regular weed smoker as it reducesy chronic pain, anxiety (yes it has stopped my panic attacks), insomnia, depression and anorexia Ice experienced from the age of 12-13 years old.

I do not drink alcohol (alcoholics in my family, I never could get drunk anyway and the hangover/way people behave drunk looks unappealing) I quit cigarettes and generally have a negative attitude to most drugs bat cannabis, even pharmaceuticals as they have messede up before.

My first time on Molly was a very low dose and I smoked weed to take the edge off the comeup and to get to sleep. Did not experience a comedown. Actually the most restful sleep and fresh, happy waking in a long time

Mind you I am not the type who dances for hours on end, rather I chilled and listened to music/drew (I’m an artist)

However purity seems to be an issue, people dancing manically, dehydrating themselves and putting their heart under stress, too high a dosage and regular abuse.

It was a nice experience but really I would only ever smoke weed regularly. For me it’s predictable and safe as I know my strains. Molly has far more pronounced effects and although I had no bad ones yet it could have just as easily turned sour. Also as someone with a history of depression I would never take it regularly because if the seratonin depletion risk.

Perhaps the drug is ok in low doses and people with good control over their mental state. It should definitely be a once in a long while thing. There is therapeutic benefit.

That being said, I much prefer to stick to cannabis, which has ironically discouraged me from bothering with other drugs. It actually has medicinal benefit and there is NO danger of overdose. Molly was fun, but it’s a gamble. Think i’ll stick to what I know.

I’ll share my story. Going into college I came down with severe depression due to the sudden change in my life. I turned to alcohol and actually quickly developed alcoholism. If I didn’t have alcohol in my system, I felt like death. So I was fixing this with more drinking, and then I got reintroduced to molly. I had done it 1 time before, and that was actually a very relaxing and fun time. But the crash was horrible and depressing and I felt sad the entire next day. Back to college, I took molly again and experienced a very small crash, and didn’t feel any sadness the next day but I still felt awful because I hadn’t drank. The second time I did it, I accompanied it with a lot of alcohol and a small amount of marijuana. Although the most dangerous, this was the best experience. I didn’t feel the crash because I was drunk. The next day did feel pretty rough though. The last time I took it, I did more than I had ever done. My body weight should take about 4.4g of molly, but I did about 1.5. After an hour, I noticed something was wrong. I didn’t want to listen to music, and all of a sudden I couldn’t move, and I could barely talk, and I felt nauseous. I was able to tell my friend that I thought I overdosed. He offered to call 911 but I asked him to wait. I was honestly about to die sitting in that chair. I was sweating so much but felt so cold from the wind. I mentally pulled myself back and went back to listening to music and singing. About 4-6 hours later I took my friend home. Immediately after I felt extremely tired. At the first red light I threw up 6 times back to back, but hadn’t eaten so it was mainly dry heaving with a little gastric acid. Finally I made it back to my dorms and attempted to fall asleep but couldn’t due to audio hallucinations every time I closed my eyes. This does make sence as a symptom, because I know that in schizophrenia it is believed to be cause to excess dopamine, and molly also releases dopamine. I ended up barely falling asleep and was woken up by a mild, full body seizure. I talked to a few people about if I should go to the hospital and they all said I needed to just rest. I was fine after that. I’m not saying it’s good or bad, it did give me many great connections with people that I will never forget, but having it cause my first overdose makes it more unappealing.

I am sorry to tell you guys, pure MDMA is pretty safe, look up what the doctors in England have to say about it. It has never caused a death except for drinking to much water. Beer kills more people in one hour that MDMA ever has. The fact the kids are getting back alley mixes with toxic stuff is sad and is the real problem.

I am not saying MDMA use is a good thing, but it is not addictive and most people will not want to use it often.

You can put all the wrong facts you want out there but most younger people will try and this drug on occasion with some of them having positive reactions to the shared feelings and empathy.

I would rather be at a party with MDMA than beer, you won’t find the fights, rapes and things.

Sorry to rain on your parade but try to go read fact based research about this drug instead of making up things.

This is not your typical big pharm addictive drug that kills you, its not deadly meth, it’s not like the biggest killers tobacco and hard liquor, it’s not even like Valium or any other number of drugs like this..

I would like to point out the fact that just because it has medicinal uses, does not mean that it should be taken. If your doctor has recommended it, it’s different. People taking Molly aren’t going to just be fine. It will screw them up eventually, as any drug would. I think everyone who takes drugs should just stop, think about your family, friends or children. You need to stop killing yourselves slowly and focus on what you could make of your life.

I used Molly and I have had no problems. I used MDMA a lot and I suffer from depression and I feel great. I being real with you, I haven’t been depressed in months and I was taking depress meds,I stopped and used MDMA and I WAS like I’m cured, I’m eating normally ,no anxiety and I’m not addicted to mdma. I will say this though every body will react differently to it. So do becareful and in no one way am I glorifying it, just sharing my experience. I say this if they can give me some prescription meds with all types of side affects that can kill me and doesn’t really work ,I rather mess with something that shows results.

Euphoria from pure MDMA is not a bonus. It is like an advance paycheck that has to be returned in the form of depression in order to balance the system. If you keep taking too much advance, you are in huge trouble. There are different opinions but I think it should be banned to be on the safe side

I am so sorry to hear about the deaths. Such a tragedy. Molly can be abused, there is no questions about it, especially if most of the consumers are teenagers and in their early 20s but it requires a very high dosage to get in trouble…….The feeling of euphoria is great and a lot of kids dont know when to stop and street dealers are cutting it with god knows what. If taken 150mg a night just on ocassions, (couple of times a year), there is no harm. Excess of everything is bad, even water can kill you if taken in large quanities. My point is that kids should never get their hands on it. Mandatory drug class in schools, explaining the disadvantages and side effects of substances, might be a good idea.

People who say “molly” is pure MDMA haven’t actually tested what they were sold. While “molly” may contain some MDMA it most likely contains meth, methylone, or other research chemicals. Why? because pure MDMA is expensive and dealers are in it to make money. This isnt Breaking Bad people, dealers dont care about purity, they dont care what they are selling you as long as you think you are getting the real deal. Most people who take “molly” havent even experienced the real McCoy any way so they wont know the difference. Another reason to “molly” is mixed is that pure MDMA is not all that addictive due to the fact your body builds a tolerance to the effects extremely fast. So to counter act that many dealers add meth to their molly to get addicted repeat customers. Unless you know a chemist pure MDMA is expensive and extremely hard to find. If you think Im wrong why don’t you do your own testing and find out.

Molly releases the feel good chemicals called dopamine, serotonin, oxytocin, and endorphins. It releases these chemicals very fast and this is what causes the feelings of euphoria and empathy for others. These chemicals are created naturally in the brain at a slow pace. When released as fast as they are when taking the drug molly, your brain will no longer be able to create those chemicals naturally which will cause major depression as soon as you come down(withdraws). Like we have figured out time and time again, what goes up, must come down. If you do molly so many times, your brain will no longer be able to recuperate itself back to normal and start producing these feel good chemicals at a normal rate like it could before. It takes a very long time for those chemicals to be able to stabilize back to normal again. This is such basic brain chemistry. I am sorry for you all who are too wrapped up in the drug to see this and are blind to this basic fact. Humans are an amazing species because of our ability to learn from others mistakes. The problem is we are too stubborn to do so. Open your eyes. From your ex molly user of many years, James.

When you were little kids you seemed to enjoy learning and nature and amusement rides and the excitement of becoming adults someday. What has happened? Why aren’t you happy? You need to search within yourselves and determine this. Drugs won’t give those answers and you are tempting death when you put these disgusting substances into your healthy beautiful young bodies. Please don’t. There’s so much in life to enjoy yet to come. As a parent, know this-i love all of you kids.

I don’t include aspirin — it’s not psychoactive.) I’m amused both at those who think doing psychoactive drugs is wonderful and life-changing and those who think it’s a terrible plague upon society. It’s just drugs. It’s one thing to do with your mind among a whole lot of potential things one can do with one’s mind.

This drug is as lethal as any illegal chemical you would ingest into your body. I agree. You can tell this is a one sided story when they act as if pure MDMA is a bad thing if it is “unlike Ecstasy, which generally is laced with other ingredients, such as caffeine or methamphetamine.”
WTF? You want the pure compound MDMA without it being “laced” with any other drugs. Who writes this stuff? MDMA was an FDA approved drug until it was banned in the 1980′s.
Don’t get me wrong, street versions of MDMA can be very dangerous and can cause lasting health and central nervous system problems (because they are not pure MDMA or they are not even the same molecule.) But once again, by making a drug illegal you only succeeded at driving it underground where you have lost all control of its production and distribution.

I absolutely agree with you and in fact PURE MDMA is what you should be doing not the shit mixed with other stuff. That is what kills you (MDMA & Meth do not go together). When I was younger I tried MDMA a few times and even had a tester to make sure it was PURE b/c I didn’t want to do something that was mixed with crap. Up until the mid 80s MDMA was legal and used in theraputic settings to help treat different disorders (mental) b/c it allowed a person to drop their inhibitions. I am so sick and tired of people giving out the wrong information to try to scare the masses. Educate yourself and learn what it is you are taking (this goes for all medications, drugs, recreational or not). I am not advocating doing this drug by any means what I’m saying is to not listen to the masses when they know NOTHING. Look at where marijuana has FINALLY come. It w/o a doubt has helped me with my chronic pain, when I had cancer & even now for anxiety & insomnia. MDMA could be used for medicinal purposes if our government actually knew what they hell they were talking about. Again this is NOT an endorsement for anyone to use this drug (or any other for that matter) but if you are please get the facts before doing something stupid.

Just attended the wake of a 17 year girl who did Molly in the “right setting”, an outdoor concert. The funeral is tomorrow. When will people wake up to the fact that kids are killing themselves every day with this crap? Read Nurse Christy’s comment above. That is exactly what happened to this girl. If they don’t care what it does to them, how about their parents? Had to physically hold up this poor girls mom today. I’ve been to too many of these, it has to stop.

Youth is wasted on the young! If you went back to my college dorm in 1970 and magically gave us the internet you would have heard every one of us defending our drug or drugs of choice. The specific drugs and the lingo has changed but the arguments are the same. For those of us that have survived to 60+, most would give you the following advice: If you have to take drugs to enjoy life, you are headed into deep shit (and that would include alcohol). Molly users sound suspiciously like LSD users were back then. At least no one is saying Molly increases their powers of mental telepathy.

  54. BGG / August 29, 2013 at 8:49 am

Agreed! There is no “war on drugs” that is just the governments way of justifying all the BS that they do. Please we all know that if they really wanted to stop drugs coming into the US they would but then how would they pay for DEA, ATF… yea they need this war to keep funding their BS agencies.

I also had my first time several days ago and I was fine. Perfectly HAPPY actually. You probably took too much or ur body didnt react well to it. Like ALL drugs, everything should be taken in moderation. It’s all about self control. I will admit, it does feel very addictive but with right people and self control you can definitely not get addicted to it. I’d do it again after a few months. The argument about it messing with the chemicals in your brain is BS. Yes it does but so does ALL drugs prescribed by psychiatrists. The Lexapro (anti depressant, anti anxiety) I take gives me this numb feeling and the other drug I first took (as prescribed by my psychiatrist) gave me such bad headaches after 1 week of taking it. Molly (if researched on the right dose, etc) would probably do more good than most of these drugs on the market.

I’m trying it for the first time tonight and it made me relaxed. Its all about how much you take and to make sure its in a safe environment like a home around people who will be there if something goes wrong. I took three small doses. And I’m fine
just watched some movies. And I had to smoke during the high BC it keeps the nausea at bay.

Marijuana is also schedule 1, yet there are countless medical uses, MDMA is great for depression and PTSD as well as other applications

I’ve also read that it is or was used to treat PTSD as well as other psych issues. I have also heard of people with fybermialgia finding relief with Molly or X when nothing else helped.

In the 1970s-80s, pure pharmaceutical MDMA was marketed under the trade name ECSTASY.Psychiatrists could prescribe it an a tablet (to be ingested). The one “labeled” application was for treating couples who were having significant Intimacy Problems (within a committed relationship), as an adjunct to (psycho) therapy. It causes indirect release of Dopamine in the brain plus activated

The only reason MDMA is a schedule 1 drug is the fact that the federal government has no control. There is a medical use for MDMA. Dr. Charles Shulgan was the man who discovered the positive effects on persons dealing with psychological issues. Because MDMA releases all the Seratonin at once a person experiencing this shows no hostility. Now, the fact that Ecstasy is “cut” is what causes the negative effects. Pure MDMA if taken over several days can cause the user to have a “Blue Tuesday”, That is depletion of seratonin and not allowing the body to replenish causes a depressive state. Those that take MDMA (I was once a user.) should understand that they are taking a chance in getting something other than X, Molly. One of the most common bunk drugs passed off as MDMA is PMA (the active ingredient in Robotussin.) I suspect that the two people that died from. When I was using (2000 – 2004) I purchased a test kit and tested every time I got some. I can say personally that after my first time I stopped drinking alcohol completely. I do not think that minors should be taking it or any drug and as for adults, moderation, moderation, moderation.

I wish people stop judging like they god.we as humans has to make our own mistakes, sometimes it may even kill us. That’s just LIFE.cigarettes kills but it generates so much revenue for the government they said what the hell keep it on the market. War makes money, death keeps the population down. It cost a billion dollars a day for a war and you tell me they can’t controll the drug problem in the US. BSx20

DRUG WAR? After assessing the situation as best I can and I am have a BSN and have been an RN for 23 years. I know that the bribes and kickbacks needed for organized drug dealers to go on unencumbered and safe from the law (for the most part). The REAL PROBLEM is that police, all levels, and politicians are ADDICTED to the money and power that comes from being an integral part of the drug trade! Not all mind you but most. I know I have worked with them. The DEA regional director of midwest (not now) told me about the mayors of major midwest cities to street cops involved from actual distribution (mayor) to the theft and payoffs at the street level. Harm prevention is the way if “they” cared. Tobacco kills more people every year! But not usually so sudden. Be honest, do research, practice harm prevention and legalize but control drugs quality. People will do what they/society want law or no. Big waste of money that could go for research into treatment/rehab.

MDMA causes your teeth to fall out! Is that what you are saying? I think you must be talking about smoked methamphetamine. On the street the drug has many corrosive chemicals in it. If there were standards of manufacture this would not be the case. Also the people who use “meth” don’t eat right (lots of sugar when they do eat/drink) and their oral hygiene is non-existant. Help those who want it. Don’t imprison those who are sick. That’s Draconian.

Drugs are apart of our society and some are legal act the exact same as doctor prescibed medications… Adderall is basically legal meth, Xanax is ridiculously addictive and one of the most. Oxycotin is always done usually before heroin usage is done.

It’s sad but thts the way our world is. Instead of all these laws and restrictions on our society our government should see nothing they do has worked or been positively effected us well there’s some positives but they are outweighed by a lot more negatives in my opinion.

Governments should stop locking people in cages and help these people. Usually drug use is done to get out of a mental cage but leads to being inside a real one…

@ Peter “I am sorry to tell you guys, pure MDMA is pretty safe. It has never caused a death except for drinking to much water.” … ‘never caused a death except for’… so you can’t say ‘never.’ It’s not “safe” and it’s not necessary. Instead of trying to make a convincing argument for your drug of choice, why not find a new hobby and live life without drugs? People manage to do it every day, honest.

That is so sad : ( People need the truth bout this drug & any other drug. It’s all bad! It leads 2 death, near death or addiction with a very sad & depressing life! I, myself have been down the road of addiction, I came very close 2 death several times, lost all of my family & friends, got in trouble with the law (spent 3 months in jail), after that I completely turned my life around, I handed my life over 2 God. I now am clean for 6 yrs & I have my family back, I’m married 2 the love of my life & the most amazing man in the world, I couldn’t be any happier! But I will never forget my past, it scares me 2 even think about it! Trust me I know it’s all bad! Stop protecting this drug or any drug! Teach kids the truth & protect them from something bad happening 2 them! U don’t need any drug, legal or not 2 be happy! Even if u have mental problems, there r many other healthy ways of solving mental issues! Help save our kids & think before u type! Please have a ❤️!!!

Organs boiling at 104?? Is that some kind of new science we haven’t heard of yet? I’m not for MDMA at all, but my arguments aren’t based on exaggeration. Can a fever that high cause seizure, hallucination, disorientation, YES. Boiling organs…no.

very nice kyle, glad you took some time to explain it. you can get addicted from everything that is fun, that’s why you need to know yourself well and if you’re mature enough to handle the lust. i think everyone should try it once and a lot of people miss a chance of mental healing because it’s prohibited.

I know a guy who took molly, coke, and alcohol. Today he is completely out of his mind, and can not work. He lost a job of over 15 years, lost everything he owned, and had to move in with a family member just to survive! Why are people so stupid?

  74. bongstar420 / March 9, 2014 at 6:48 pm

They can define things how ever they want. There is not empirical requirement for these people. They are in fact, required to ignore any fact that does not support their “drug free” agenda.

  75. bongstar420 / March 9, 2014 at 6:56 pm

It doesn’t help people want to support the war machine. I figure that is mostly the deal with Molly.
