Kentucky Clinic Stops Writing New Prescriptions for Xanax Due to Abuse Concerns

/By

A mental health clinic in Louisville, KY, has stopped writing prescriptions for the anti-anxiety drug Xanax because of concerns about abuse and overdoses. Experts say benzodiazepines, including Xanax, are often overlooked as a source of prescription drug abuse.

The clinic, Seven Counties Services, made the decision to stop writing prescriptions for Xanax and its generic version, alprazolam, due to a large number of overdoses involving the drug both locally and nationally, The New York Times reports. The clinic stopped providing new prescriptions for the drug in April and will wean patients off the medication by December. Several other health care providers in the region have also stopped giving patients prescriptions for certain opioids and benzodiazepines, the article notes.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the estimated number of emergency department visits involving nonmedical use of benzodiazepines increased 89 percent nationwide between 2004 and 2008. The drug’s effects are felt almost immediately and last only a few hours, which can lead to abuse.

Seven Counties has switched some of the estimated 3,000 patients on Xanax to clonazepam, a benzodiazepine that is longer-acting and does not take effect as quickly. It is thought to be less addictive than Xanax. The clinic ultimately plans to treat patients with severe anxiety with an antidepressant and benzodiazepine, as well as teaching patients to learn coping skills with cognitive behavioral therapy.

Some doctors object to cutting off Xanax completely, saying the drug helps many patients who use it correctly.

Also, I recommend it to all my friends because when we were in high school, it was when ecstasy or MDMA was popular so obviously we found out that drug had some serious side effects and I found that Xanax makes all the side effects of MDMA go away completely. Anxiety attacks are gone, I can eat at restaurants without wanting to throw up, it honestly just helps with everything. I used to have the worst anxiety when I was not prescribed. I was taking LSD, mushrooms, X, liquid g, ketamine, heroin, cocaine, crack, speed, opiates (which I still take oxycodone for 5 slipped discs) but honestly I enjoy life way more. I suggest anybody who can not abuse it should be prescribed to it. It makes my friends who have anger problems, act really nice. Its a miracle drug.

I think all prescribed drugs can become evil little demons that eventually take over, now dont gdt me wrong. Medications for life threating situations or for individuals who wont misuse it is fine. But xanax, opioids, amoung many other mind altering drugs I feel are way over prescribed. I know first hand. I have Fibromyalgia. Im in pain quite often. When I worked long hard hours I was on norco, 3 times a day, methadone, 30 mg 3 times a day, elivil for sleep, and cymbolta. I never abused my medications, but , right before christmas when Dr. Offices close , I called my cybolta and methadone in four days before. With high demand they didnt get filled. So I called dr office to at least get samples of cybolta.. Dr had left early, nurse refused me. In that next week I felt as though I was going ti die, dizzy, vertigo, had chills, vomiting, achy, so bad my skin hurt to the touch. At that point I never went back, except for weaning of methodone. Which took over 2 years. I stick to ibuprofen when desperate, and meditation. But xanax has (what I call possession), taken over at least 60% of my friends lives. They serious buy it on the streets like meth . It took the lives of two people I knew and permanently debilitated three. One is foever clinically depressed and bed bound, the other lost use of right side due to overdose, and stroke. The other has had two strokes, has seizures every day and lost her ability to talk. She remembers how , but cant, … and they still buy it and abuse it, mix it with all other kinds of prescription drugs. I know many, many pill addicts and they are just as bad as heroin users, actually many pill addicts end up on heroin. I think we need to put a stop to this. Its completely out of control. Im going to do some research and take some polls, and repost. Just to show you how bad it really is,

think xanax “is the root of most drug related crimes and overdoses”. What? Really?! Xanax? No words.

I believe that doctors all over the united states should stop writing prescriptions for zanax. I’ve never seen it do anyone any good. It changes a persons personality in an instant and is the root of most drug related crimes and overdoses. I pray for the day when they no longer produce this evil pill.
