Presidential Candidate Kucinich Supports Medical Marijuana

Rep. Dennis J. Kucinich (D-Ohio), a Democratic hopeful in the 2004 presidential campaign, said he supports legalizing marijuana for medical purposes, the Washington Post reported May 30.

While campaigning in California, Kucinich said if elected president he would issue an executive order legalizing medical marijuana “as an act of compassion and expression of humanity.”

“If a doctor makes that determination, or the patient asks for it, I think it ought to be permitted,” Kucinich said. “I've talked to too many people who have had family members suffering from terminal illness who feel it would provide them the most relief from pain and suffering.”

Kucinich is the only Democratic presidential candidate to express his support for medical marijuana.

Although eight states permit the use of marijuana for medical purposes, marijuana remains illegal for any use under federal law.
