Sales of alcohol for consumption at home has grown 21 percent since 2004, according to market research firm Mintel, Food Product Design reported July 15.
Those who imbibe at home are drinking nearly double what they would at restaurants and bars, the report said. Beer is still the most popular alcoholic beverage consumed overall, but wine was the most popular purchase for off-premise consumption.
The report found that 28 percent of those surveyed said they purchased less-expensive brands to save money. The trend toward at-home consumption is tied to the recession, which has led to fewer outings to restaurants and bars, the study said.
