Beyond Addiction offers a roadmap to family and friends for how to help a loved one struggling with substance abuse. Learn how to use kindness, positive reinforcement and communication, together with limit-setting and self-care, to “stay connected” and help a loved one change. The authors draw on over 50 collective years of clinical experience and a mountain of research evidence, to present the best advice science has to offer, in practical and accessible language that families can understand and immediately begin to use in their lives.

The Parent's 20-Minute Guide is a compassionate and powerful guide for parents who want to help, stay involved, and provide a loving environment for their children. Often parents simply don’t have the skills to handle the behaviors, choices and moods their kids are exhibiting. Based on the research-supported CRAFT approach (Community Reinforcement and Family Training), the guide provides specific strategies and ideas for parents to help prevent and constructively address substance abuse issues with their child, ranging from first experimentations to behavior that requires formal treatment. While there is no fail-safe method for preventing substance use, and no perfect way to deal with it once it occurs, there are effective guidelines and skills parents can learn to help their child (and their whole family!). The Parent's 20-Minute Guide outlines the concepts and strategies they need and will help set things on a positive and affirming track.

About The Partnership at Drugfree.org
Ninety percent of addictions start in the teenage years. The Partnership at Drugfree.org is dedicated to solving the problem of teen substance abuse. Together with experts in science, parenting and communications, the nonprofit translates research on teen behavior, addiction and treatment into useful and effective resources for both individuals and communities. Working toward a vision where all young people will be able to live their lives free of drug and alcohol abuse, The Partnership at Drugfree.org works with parents and other influencers to help them prevent and get help for drug and alcohol abuse by teens and young adults. The organization depends on donations from individuals, corporations, foundations and the public sector and is thankful to SAG-AFTRA and the advertising and media industries for their ongoing generosity.

If you or someone you know is struggling with drug or alcohol abuse, please call The Parents Toll-Free Helpline at 1-855-DRUGFREE.
