Dr. Jane Greer Emphasizes The Importance Of Support Systems

/By

Dr. Jane Greer is a marriage and family therapist and is frequently featured on various television shows and in publications, providing expert relationship and family advice. In addition, Dr. Jane shares her knowledge on her own radio shows, including “Doctor On Call,” and her books, the most recent titled, “What About Me? Stop Selfishness From Ruining Your Relationship.”

In this video, Dr. Jane emphasizes the importance of support systems when dealing with a child who is abusing alcohol and other drugs. “You want to build as much support around you with family and friends as you can,” she explains. “And everybody who knows you and loves you …is going to work to keep you on the straight and narrow path.”

Have you reached out to friends and family about your child’s drug or alcohol addiction? Or did you choose not to share? We’d love to hear about your experiences — please add your comment below.

After losing one son and trying to keep another son alive during this rising epidemic of pharma abuse…People are apprehensive in approaching me, yet desperately seeking my advice on how I am still sane and able to keep it together. I make sure everyone knows I’m 100% approachable while disclaiming any notion of “giving” advise, rather just listen and point to resources, starting with PDFA!!

I cannot express how important it is to be open about your situation and more importantly, to find/build a support system! Find out what other parents are saying; while at the same time educate yourself, again PDFA! Observe who has a positive healthy outlook and who doesn’t! I know for my grief, it helps to have my phone number or email given to a mother who found their child using, and does not know where to begin. I don’t care if people call me at 2am!

I couldn’t put all my grief, my craziness, my learning on my husband and family…I needed to build diverse support from outsiders at times! Support should be balanced! (sig nif other, family, coworkers, professionals, groups, social media etc and most importantly other parents who are going thru this craziness) not just comfortable people, but people who will set me straight and not let me manipulate them or tell me what I want to hear (again, craziness).

    Simply….SUPPORT HAS KEPT ME ALIVE!
