A non-confrontational approach to eliciting recovery-seeking behaviors. The approach emphasizes relationship-building (expressions of empathy), heightening discrepancy between an individual's personal goals and present circumstances, avoiding argumentation (activation of problem-sustaining defense structure), rolling with resistance (emphasizing respect for the individual experiencing the problem and their necessity and ability to solve the problem), and supporting self-efficacy (expressing confidence in the person's ability to recover and expressing confidence in recovery). (Miller and Rollnick, 1991)
