WASHINGTON, D.C., September 26 – The Partnership for a Drug-Free America honored Senator Ben Nelson (D-NE) with the 2007 Guardian Award at a ceremony held today at the United States Capitol. The Guardian Award is given annually in recognition of leadership on substance abuse issues, and in appreciation of efforts to protect America’s families from the threat of substance abuse.
The award was presented by Stephen J. Pasierb, president and CEO of the Partnership, along with members of the Partnership’s Parent Advisory Board, a committed group of parents and caregivers from around the country who all share a variety of family experiences with drugs and alcohol and who help guide the development of the tools and resources the Partnership is developing for parents in the coming year.
“We are proud to honor the contributions of Senator Nelson with the 2007 Guardian Award,“ said Pasierb. “As a champion for public health issues, Senator Nelson has worked to keep our families and children safe from substance abuse. A strong ally to the Partnership, he has been a strong supporter of drug prevention and law enforcement programs, particularly with regard to the spread of methamphetamine. Additionally, he has played an integral part in the Nebraska launch of the pilot parent helpline for drug and alcohol advice and guidance.”
“When it comes to fighting drug abuse, there are no simple solutions, and a complex problem requires a sophisticated response,” said Senator Nelson. “Today we are witnessing a 23 percent reduction in drug use among teens across the United States and I believe that this is due in no small part to such organizations as the Partnership for a Drug-Free America. There is, however, still much work to be done. I am honored to be recognized as a supporter of such an important issue.”
