Director of Public Affairs Partnership for a Drug-Free America
The Director of Public Affairs has responsibility for the Partnership’s voice and profile to the outside world – primarily with the news media and online but also to key stakeholders in public health, public policy and academia.
The Director will be responsible for crafting external communications strategies designed to advance the Partnership’s role as cause leader in the substance abuse field, particularly in the area of helping parents prevent or seek help for their children’s abuse of drugs or alcohol. He/she will be responsible for writing and editing key on and offline content that will promote the Partnership’s mission, programs and resources to parents, opinion leaders, policy makers and prospective funders and partners.
In particular, the Director will promote the Partnership and its resources through key channels related to adolescent substance abuse: e.g., healthcare professionals, juvenile justice system, educators and community based organizations.
The Director will serve as a senior spokesperson for the Partnership – conversant with the literature and scientific data related to substance abuse in America, and able to articulate the Partnership’s mission and its programmatic objectives both knowledgeably and persuasively.
Specifically, the Director of Public Affairs will:
- Lead the strategic design of a multi-faceted communications program addressing all key constituents;
- Develop and sustain relationships with all forms of major national media, with the objective of growing the Partnership’s visibility and credibility on the subject of preventing, intervening-in and treating drug and alcohol addiction. Enlist and deploy a core group of non-staff spokespeople - including well-known personalities - to raise awareness of the need for effective substance abuse prevention and treatment, and to promote the Partnership’s leadership in this area.
- Work closely with program management to provide consumer public relations at the national and local levels.
- Work closely with the Director of Development and the President to effectively position the Partnership and its programs to prospective funders and opinion leaders.
- Oversee the Public Affairs team and take responsibility for the department’s planning and budgeting and for managing, motivating and evaluating its staff of two.
Qualifications
- 10 years of experience in a senior role with significant external responsibilities relevant to the above requirements. Candidates with prior experience at a nonprofit engaged in health-related activities are strongly preferred.
- Ability to understand, interpret and question major national survey data and consumer research. Ability to derive credible, persuasive storylines from data. Strong relationship building, story pitching and general media skills and experience. A track record of being a trustworthy resource to the media and an individual of the highest professional standards.
- Superb communication, writing, editing and large group presentation skills are essential.
- A passion for the mission of the Partnership for a Drug-Free America – to help parents prevent, intervene in and treat drug and alcohol use by their children – is critical.
- Collaborative and supportive style capable of working productively in a skilled team of committed professionals. A person who demands accountability and effectiveness in all aspects of their work.

Accounting Manager -- Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer
Job Requirements
- College degree in accounting; CPA and/or MBA a plus;
- 4-5 years business experience with nonprofit experience;
- Computer proficient -- Word, Excel, data base, accounting software, online filings;
- Good financial and budgetary skills-monthly closing, accounts payable, donations;
- Excellent communication skills -- dealing with vendors, contractors, and key constituents;
- Organizational skills & prioritization of projects; handle multiple tasks & deadlines;
- Works well independently, self-motivated & good judgment; team player; manage staff (2);
Month Financial Reporting & Budgeting -- $8 million budget/40 staff
- Manage accounting staff -- close books monthly; prepare/review journal entries;
- Write monthly financial report to management with accuracy and timeliness;
- Preparation & monitoring of budget process – departmental, project and grant;
- Review all month-end schedules, reports and cash receipts for accuracy and completeness.
Fiscal Year End
- Prepare all necessary schedules and documentation to complete the audit; liaison with KPMG;
- Compile year-end financial statements and accompanying footnotes;
- Assist in preparation of A-133 audit as necessary;
- Preparation of tax returns -- 990 federal, and state tax filings;
Cash Disbursements/Accounts Payable/Payroll
- Supervise senior accountant and junior accountant who review invoices for accuracy and completeness prior to payment; print vendor checks bi-weekly; maintain accounting software -- Navision
- Analyze expenditures and make recommendations for cost savings/efficiencies;
- Prepare bi-monthly payroll and maintain payroll records through ADP;
- Administration of timesheet system through ADP;
Tax Deferred Annuity
- Responsible for recording and reporting under 403(B) plan including meeting with all eligible employees, periodic transmission of participant contributions and remittance, and dealing with outside administrator;
Federal Grants/Contracts
- Monitor government grants and prepare the monthly/quarterly reports for prompt reimbursement.
- Compliance with grants and contract conditions; preparation of invoices/reports, as required;
Other
- Manage corporate travel account site - adding new users, administering user-rights and trouble-shooting issues such as site usage and vendor related issues;
- Assist the Director, Human Resources -- updating financial policies and procedures manual.
